Speed Addition Strategy

To add numbers quickly in your head, the core strategy is to break the numbers apart and add from left to right (hundreds first), rather than right to left like you do on paper. This reduces mental strain.

1. The Left-to-Right Strategy

Split the second number into its place values and add sequentially.

Example: 342 + 235
• 342 + 200 = 542
• 542 + 30 = 572
• 572 + 5 = 577

2. Compensation (Rounding Up)

If a number ends in 7, 8, or 9, round up to an easy boundary, then adjust at the end.

Example: 456 + 198
198 is very close to 200 (2 short)
• Round up: 456 + 200 = 656
• Subtract extra: 656 - 2 = 654

3. "Make a Hundred" Rule

Transfer a small value from one number to bump the other to a perfect hundred.

Example: 295 + 143
295 needs exactly 5 to become 300
• Steal 5 from 143 (leaves 138)
• New problem: 300 + 138 = 438

4. Grouping by Columns

When minimal carrying is required, separate columns, add each, and combine.

Example: 523 + 364
• Hundreds: 500 + 300 = 800
• Tens: 20 + 60 = 80
• Ones: 3 + 4 = 7
• Combine: 800 + 80 + 7 = 887
🌟 The Golden Rule

Never try to visualize the written addition algorithm in your head. Picturing "carrying the 1" takes too much working memory. Speak running totals aloud to yourself instead!
